Our ego can be both a blessing and a curse in life. It’s a part of our neuro-physiological system that helps us maintain a sense of self-worth and self-concept, which can lead to personal and professional success. However, there are times when our ego can become a barrier to our achievement, and we need to learn how to navigate it to move forward in life.

When we feel threatened, blamed, shamed, or embarrassed, our ego kicks in, creating its own reality in response to the “ego arrows” fired at us. This ego reality blinds us to the actual situation and prevents us from seeing the full picture. We become defensive and handicapped, unsure of our place in the world.

So, how do we prevent our ego from getting in the way of our spiritual growth and success? The key is to recognize when our ego is activated and acknowledge that it’s attempting to protect us, but also shutting out the truth. We need to learn how to honor and appreciate our ego position, while also learning how to navigate it.

When we are conscious of our ego response, we can adjust our reaction to the situation, preventing our ego from impeding our achievement. We can become more open to the full narrative and behave according to truth, rather than our ego’s perspective.

To maintain control of our ego at all times, we can ask ourselves three essential spiritual questions when we feel fear, danger, or humiliation approaching.

Firstly, we can ask ourselves, “Is this how it actually is, or is it how I’m reacting to it?” We need to take a moment to consider if what we think we’re seeing is accurate or if we’re merely reacting to someone who “pushed one of our buttons.” Failure to check in with ourselves can have a negative impact on our spiritual growth, relationships, and success.

Secondly, we can ask ourselves, “Why does this have such an impact on me?” We need to examine the world around us and discover why the current circumstance is causing an ego response. We can remove ourselves from the situation as much as possible to have some alone time to think things over. By taking the high road and activating emotional intelligence, we can overcome the issue in a positive manner, rather than being entirely unconscious and going directly to the low road, which causes defensiveness.

Lastly, we can ask ourselves, “Do other people feel the same way I do?” We need to make sure we’re not the only ones affected by the issue. If others are experiencing the same emotions as us, we should discuss the matter so that no one overreacts. Our ego’s job is to keep us secure and motivated to perform certain tasks, but it’s not appropriate to pretend that our present emotional state is the only one conceivable while working with others. That is why we should double-check and, if necessary, alter the reference from self to others.

Remember that spiritual growth is a process that takes time and effort. We can seek guidance from spiritual coaches and mentors to help us on our journey. By asking ourselves the three essential questions anytime we feel fear, threat, or humiliation approaching, we can make significant progress in our spiritual growth and achieve success in all areas of our lives. Embrace your ego, but learn to navigate it, and you’ll find yourself on the path to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

As you embark on your spiritual journey, remember that it is a continuous process that requires consistent effort and dedication. Take time to reflect, meditate, and connect with your inner self to understand your purpose and align your actions with your beliefs.

If you find yourself struggling along the way, don’t be afraid to seek guidance and support from others who share your beliefs or have experience in the spiritual realm. There are many resources available to help you on your path, such as books, workshops, and spiritual leaders.
