Navigating the Complexities of New Parenthood & Unpacking Unwanted Advice and Microaggressions

Becoming a parent has been an incredible journey, filled with moments of joy and challenges I never anticipated. As a new mother, I’ve encountered a series of experiences that have left me reflecting on the dynamics of parenthood, the weight of unsolicited advice, and the impact of microaggressions. In this blog post, I explore the thoughts and emotions that have been running through my mind lately.- maybe you can resonate?

1. The Weight of Microaggressions and Unwanted Advice

Have you ever had someone pronounce your child’s name wrong, time and time again? Or offer parenting advice that feels more like judgment than support? These may seem like minor incidents, but when they happen repeatedly, they start to take a toll. I’ve had certain people, who I’d hoped would be a source of guidance, have inadvertently become a source of frustration due to their microaggressions and unwanted advice. From purposely mispronouncing my baby’s name to criticizing my parenting choices, I find myself navigating a sea of emotions that range from annoyance to hurt.

2. The Invisible Work of Motherhood

Before becoming a mother, I had a vague understanding of what it meant to care for a child. However, the reality of motherhood hit me like a ton of bricks. Contrary to popular belief, being a stay-at-home mum doesn’t equate to endless leisure time. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I’m on duty 24/7, catering to my child’s needs, and juggling household responsibilities. The lack of breaks, the constant emotional labor, and the invisibility of my efforts are overwhelming.

3. Navigating Relationships: Toxic vs. Supportive

Navigating relationships during this period has been both enlightening and challenging. My interactions with certain people have highlighted the contrast between toxic dynamics and genuine support. While some offer unsolicited advice and undermine my choices, others provide a safe space where I can share my struggles without judgment. The importance of empathetic relationships becomes clearer each day, as I learn to distinguish between those who contribute positively to my journey and those who inadvertently add to the weight on my shoulders.

4. Embracing Self-Care and Overcoming Toxic Energy

To combat the growing frustration and toxicity around me, I’ve started to prioritize self-care. Recognizing the need to release negativity, I’ve found comfort in activities that bring me joy and peace. Whether it’s engaging in creative hobbies, creating new content for The ASL Membership, or connecting with friends who genuinely uplift me, I’ve realized that taking care of my own well-being is essential for my overall happiness and ability to navigate challenges with a clear mind.

5. Embracing Authenticity and Setting Boundaries

The pandemic in 2020 led me to discover the truth of how much energy I had. By distancing myself from toxic influences, I had the space to embrace my true self and find strength in my vulnerability. Setting boundaries has now become crucial in preserving my mental and emotional health. I’ve learned that it’s okay to prioritize my well-being and distance myself from individuals who don’t offer the support I need.

6. The Strength of Motherhood

As I reflect on my journey as a new mother, I’m reminded of the resilience and strength I’ve discovered within myself. Despite the challenges, I’ve managed to navigate the rollercoaster of emotions and responsibilities that come with parenthood. My child’s smiles, laughter, and milestones serve as a constant reminder of the incredible bond we share, making every struggle worth it.

Conclusion

This blog post has allowed me to share my experience as a new mother, unveiling the realities of parenthood that often go unnoticed. Microaggressions, unsolicited advice, and the invisible work of motherhood are all part of this journey, but they don’t define it. Instead, they inspire me to seek positivity, embrace self-care, and surround myself with supportive individuals who uplift rather than undermine. Every day, I’m learning and growing as I navigate the complexities of new parenthood, determined to provide the best for my child while honoring my own well-being. 💗
